Sad News at Hugs

Sad News at Hugs

Sad news for Hugs, unfortunately one of our rescue ponies has tested positive for strangles. The infected pony is doing well and is under very strict isolation and care. We are optimistic that we have contained the infection, although we are conscious how quickly strangles spreads. We are following veterinary advice including temperature checks, traffic light systems and all our bio security measures are in place. The equine yard is on lockdown to try to reduce the risk of the disease spreading.

Our youth well-being sessions will be able to continue in a separate area of the charity’s premises with the other farm animals, as the disease is specific to equines only and therefore we cannot involve any ponies at the moment in these sessions.

For those people who have recently adopted a rescue pony and are waiting for a delivery date, have recently applied to rehome a rescue pony or are waiting to visit to meet your potential pony, our rehoming officer will be in contact once we have further information from our vet or the all clear is given.

Strangles facts:

• Bacterial disease caused by Strep equi (Streptococcus equi subspecies equi)
• It is not an airborne disease, close contact between horses or direct contamination of environment is required for spread
• The incubation period is 3 – 10 days and clinical course about 3 weeks if untreated
• 10% horses may become ‘carriers’, a source of future infection. When carriers have fully recovered from strangles and aren’t showing signs of infection but are still infected, they are able to spread the bacteria to others. They can carry this for life and you will not be able to determine whether your horse is a carrier by visibly looking yourself, you will need your vet to check.
• Treating carriers – Usually, the pus from abscesses dries and forms balls called chondroids, these will be identified by your vet through a guttural pouch endoscopy. Chondroids are removed from the guttural pouch and antibiotics may be required to kill any remaining bacteria. Horses are re-examined after two weeks to check if they are then free from infection.

National Lottery Support Hugs

National Lottery Support Hugs

Exciting news here at Hugs! We have been awarded £6,718 from the awesome The National Lottery Community Fund to continue our youth well-being project, Hugs Helping Hands. This project is in huge demand and we are extremely grateful to receive this funding for us to support more young people in need.
Hugs Helping Hands supports children and young people through a unique intervention that creates a circular relationship between the environment, rescue animals and people we support. Our ‘Hugs community’ is inclusive, safe, caring, nurturing and kind for both animals and people. We support a huge range of complex needs including; social, emotional, physical and mental ill health, trauma and abuse, reduced or non-school attendance, SEND, social isolation, bereavement, self-harm and suicide ideation.
A young person now being referred to the NHS for mental health support every 30 seconds. With overwhelming pressure on mental health services and many traditional talk therapies being ineffective or inappropriate for young people, our charity is helping fill a vital gap to support those in need with this unique project. We are also one of the first organisations to be accepted onto the HEIR register, evidencing that we are operating credible, high quality, safe and ethical practice standards for our service provision for both animals and people 🐴🥰

Corporate Volunteer Day with Suez

Corporate Volunteer Day with Suez

On Tuesday we had some brilliant volunteers from SUEZ UK visit Hugs HQ. They had a varied day that included:

👉Weeding and clearing our sign flower bed
👉Clearing the laminitic paddock
👉Creating dens for the pigs for enrichment
👉Grooming and handling some of our rescues

The volunteers were able to meet all the animals and learn about their stories. It was also farrier day for some of the horses and ponies, so they were able to see some of the remedial farriery taking place and why it is needed.

Corporate volunteer days not only help our charity hugely, but they are also great for your business too by:

💚Helping business image and reputation
💚Networking – improving PR & marketing opportunities
💚Boosting office moral, employee well-being & encouraging teambuilding
💚Defining corporate identity
💚Enhancing employee relations & employee retention
💚Donations are tax deductible

If you would like to get involved through corporate volunteering please email laura@hugsfoundation.org.uk or visit our website https://hugsfoundation.org.uk/business-hugs-heroes/ to find out more 🤗
